Other related projects

Here we show some current internal studio projects in development.

Most will become publications, fonts or online trials. They have all started life as points of interest for us and there is no formal brief other than to make something which shows off the subject to its best advantage. General themes are ephemera, the tactile nature of print, colour, form and the beauty or craft and other older technologies.

Beer mats

Beer mats

Several years ago one of our number bought a small collection of old beer mats (which we have since added to). We’re drawn to their naive graphics, crude printing and their ephemeral nature.

These objects were designed to be thrown away yet here we are forty or more years later dwelling on them! Looking at them closely we became interested in some of the marvellous bi‑lines (‘A full and fruity rum’ or ‘A better beer’). But most of all their charm is in the half‑remembered era from which they come: when pubs were closed‑in affairs – no large plate glass windows or good food – just smoke, a surley barman, a lone pork pie in a glass cabinet and some beer‑sodden carpet.

This research has been put together in a book which celebrates the graphic language of these items.
